Here’s another groovy Top 5 for everyone’s enjoyment (this time in no particular order):

1) Bloc Party, Silent Alarm: this band reminds me a ton of the Police, which is a very good thing. Their drummer has a Stewart Copeland-esque way of racheting up the tension with lightning-quick fills and hi-hat work, and their sound is atmospheric, achieved with a minimum of instrumentation. I particularly enjoy “Banquet,” which starts with an urgent, dance-y riff and turns into probably a great song for a movie chase scene. For players only.

2) Late nights/early mornings. Bedtimes of 3:30, 6:00, and 2:00 (Thurs [!], Fri, Sat) this weekend should have left me exhausted for work this week, but instead I feel like I lived the hell out of the weekend. I couldn’t do it every week (or every month, for that matter), but once in awhile it’s still fun to pretend you’re in college. The great part is that I have a better time now than I ever did in college, but you needn’t feel sorry for me on that account.

3) Response cards. We sent our wedding invitations out last week, and now seems an appropriate time to note that if you haven’t already received one, you likely are not going to. I am sorry if you’re one of those folks. In any case, getting them back has been a real treat, as people have been adding little comments like “can’t wait!” and putting exclamation points after the “accept with pleasure” option. They also signify the fact that our wedding is actually going to happen one of these days, which let’s finish this silly planning and celebrate already!

4) Being about 2 pounds lighter. This is a pathetically small amount to notice you’ve lost, but I do, damn it, and I’m enjoying the hell out of it. Only 8 more pounds to lose in the next 5 weeks and I will have met my goal of dropping 10 by the wedding. If you’re going to go to the trouble of wearing a tux, you should take the time to make sure you wear it well, is what I’ve always said. Also gives me a legit opportunity to indulge in my secret guilty pleasure of not eating very much. I can’t explain it either.

5) Wiffle ball. We’ve not played as much this year as last, and it’s true that I injured my right wrist the last time we played and it’s still bothering me, but this is still a damn fun game. I am hoping that some of the boys will venture out to my apartment after this Saturday’s bachelor party to grill out and play ball, perhaps not necessarily in that order. I am not getting my hopes up, but I can virtually guarantee fun. Not many, my friends…not many can do that.
